Portland Real Estate Information Portland is the biggest city in Oregon, and not to be confused with its sister to the east Portland, Maine. Though the population is a mid-sized 500,000 or so, the metropolitan area houses about 2 million people. It remains one of the most important Pacific seaports on the west coast, though it lies 60 miles inland on the banks of the Willamette River.
The city is a very livable city because great care was taken by its city council throughout its development. The "Urban Growth Boundary" established in 1974 has effectively limited urban sprawl while preserving valuable farmland. For this reason, the city of Portland is well balanced and not as car-centric as most other major American cities. A major emphasis on parks, public space, light rapid transit, and mixed-use/high density development have created an urban oasis unlike anything else in the United States.
One claim to fame for Portland is the ideal weather for growing roses. The city hosts the Rose Festival, International Rose Test Garden, and the Rose Garden Arena. Visiting any of the city's districts is a great way to enjoy a big city without the bustle and pollution that you're used to.
Proximity to skiing, pro sports teams within the city, numerous tourist attractions, and some good universities make Portland an ideal place to settle down in a new home.
