Carbonville was named for its enormous spring by the French statesman, Talleyrand. The rampant demolition of historic buildings so prevalent elsewhere in the United States from the 1950s - 1970s largely bypassed Carbonville leaving untouched many large, historically and architecturally significant commercial and residential buildings.
