The City of Spartanburg is the county seat of Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The city was named after the Spartan Rifles, a Revolutionary War militia unit that served at the crucial Battle of Cowpens.

Spartanburg has a thriving economy. It is the headquarters of more than 40 corporations, including Milliken, the world's largest privately owned company. Textiles are the foundation here, but diversification has come over the past two decades, with the influx of nearly 90 firms representing 15 foreign countries. The area is also known for its peaches and has been touted as being the Fresh Peach Capital of the South.

An education center, Spartanburg is home to five colleges: Wofford, Converse and Spartanburg Technical colleges, the Spartanburg Methodist College and University of USC Spartanburg. In addition, the Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic draws students from all over the country.

In addition to having a wonderful parks and recreation system, Spartansburg also host the National Football League's Carolina Panthers during their preseason training camp. The 3,400-seat Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium hosts many musical performances, and is South Carolina’s largest theatre.
