Bay Real Estate Information Bay City, is the county seat of Matagorda County, Texas. Situated ninety miles North of Southwest of Houston, at the junction of State Highways 35 and 60, the community is named for its location on Bay Prairie, between the richly productive bottomlands of the Colorado River and Caney Creek. It was established in 1894 by oil magnate, David Swickheimer, and has a population of close to 20,000 people.
In the early 20th century, Bay City was but a small area with barely any inhabitants, even after it was named County Seat! However with the finding of oil in the area and construction of mills, Bay City became a thriving community at the center of the largest rice-producing area in the nation. Since then, Bay City has grown steadily as a library, Bay City Business College which offered the community's first higher education, football stadium, schools, airport, and Barge Canal, were constructed.
The arrival of petrochemical companies, Celanese Chemical Company, Celanese, South Texas Nuclear Project, and Occidental Chemical Company, ushered in a new era of growth in the City. These companies are the larges employers in Bay City.
Almost everybody in Bay City's knows one anotherm and this has produced an extremely tight and friendly community.
