Originally established in 1849 as a place devoted to guarding El Paso, Fort Bliss continues to be a major American military center.

Home to the United States Army Air Defense Artillery Center and School, Fort Bliss has the unique distinction of being the training site for all U.S. Air Defenders and those air defenders working with allied nations. The community is named Fort Bliss after the Lieutenant Colonel, William Bliss, who also was the son of law of President Zachary Taylor.
