Pecos Real Estate Information Pecos (pronounced Pay-Cuss) may be a small little community, but you’ll be hard pressed to find another community of any stature with as much character! From its roots as the wildest of the wild west towns, to its days as a strategic WWII base, to its large luscious melons – Pecos has a style and flair all of its own.
Located in northwestern Texas along the western banks of the Pecos River in the high prairies bordering the Chihuahua Desert, Pecos is the county seat of Reeves County. Pecos is about 200 miles east of El Paso and 400 miles west of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The estimated population of Pecos is 9,500 people.
Pecos established itself as a rough and tumble town during the days of the westward migration of pioneers, Indian Wars, and cattle trails. The stomping grounds of one of Texas’ most dangerous and notorious criminal and gunfighter, Clay Allison, Pecos epitomized the “wild” in the wild west. In fact, Pecos is recognized as being “Home To The World’s First Rodeo” in 1883. With the arrival of the railroads in the late 1800’s, Pecos settled down and became an important commercial center between Fort Worth and El Paso. With the influx of irrigation technologies, farming activities increased and has helped create Pecos’ world-renowned cantaloupes.
