Though Uvalde has its own hospital, most essential institutions must be found 90 miles away in San Antonio. Interesting destinations within a few hour's drive include the booming cities of San Antonio, Austin, Houston, and Corpus Christie. The gulf coast is accessible through Corpus Christie.

Only two major highways pass through the region, but they connect to many other highways leading to Texas' big cities.

One major feature of Uvalde is the Southwest Texas Junior College which has about 3000 students. The college is a hub for social events, arts, and culture in a small town that lacks much funding for such things. Student culture is strong and Uvalde maintains a distinct flavor of a college community.
