Like bookends to the bloodiest conflict Americans have every fought, the name Bull Run serves as the referees whistle to start and stop play. The first Bull Run is very indicative of how the war was fought in general. As the first major battle of the war both armies arrived brimming with confidence. In fact, many people from the town arrived and brought picnic baskets thinking they would watch a short relatively bloodless battle. Instead, the south gained a quick advantage and continued to press it until the Union army was running for its life…as well as the folks having their picnic.

From then on, the battle for the United States became a bloody and protracted war of attrition that essentially ended when the south ran out of resources (but not fighting spirit). Anyway, Bull Run will forever be remembered as the place where it all started and America realized what it was in for. But today, Bull Run is a cheerful place with a population of about 10,000 people and through sheer osmosis, they can pretty much tell you anything you might want to know about that conflict and the war in general.
