The Minutemen were instrumental in the first American Revolution battle in Virginia at the Battle of the Great Bridge. During the Civil War, Culpeper was a strategic location for both Union and Confederate forces. In fact, the great generals Ulysses S. Grant (Union) and Robert E. Lee (Confederate) both had their headquarters at separate times during the Civil War.
