The charming town of Culpeper is nestled in the foothills of the wonderful Blue Ridge Mountains in the north-central piedmont of northern Virginia. Culpeper is part of Culpeper County, where it serves as county seat. With so much to offer, Culpeper’s picturesque setting enhances the high standard of living found here. Home to rich and storied history and heritage, Culpeper has played a pivotal role throughout the nation’s existence. Originally established in 1759, Culpeper was the site of early anti-British feelings prior to the American Revolution. In 1775, the valiant Culpeper Minutemen were formed. The Minutemen were instrumental in the first American Revolution battle in Virginia at the Battle of the Great Bridge. During the Civil War, Culpeper was a strategic location for both Union and Confederate forces. In fact, the great generals Ulysses S. Grant (Union) and Robert E. Lee (Confederate) both had their headquarters at separate times during the Civil War.

Today, Culpeper’s illustrious history and heritage is maintained at the popular Museum of Culpeper History and the Germanna Historic Site. Walking the streets of Culpeper can also give you a sense of its history. Culpeper contains over 140 structures listed in the National Historical Register making it one of the largest historic districts in all of the “Old Dominion State” of Virginia.
