Bluefield is 11,000 citizens strong and growing! Our modest size, however, is unmatched in productivity, even compared to larger centers. Deep among the Appalachian Mountain Range, Bluefield has become known as one of those communities where motivated, dedicated, friendly individuals truly work well in making the community stronger and better than ever!

Bluefield was incorporated in 1889 and immediately, the town grew and people worked in the great coalfields. Only 600 citizens lived along the dusty streets of the community in 1890, sharing the right of way with cows, chickens and pigs. By 1900, 5000 people crowded the smartly built brick downtown along the "Avenue" above the rail yards. In 1903, signs of growth and prosperity were showing - Bluefield had the highest automobile ownership per capita in the nation.

Even with the influx in population, business and political sprit, Bluefieldians were (and still are) a close group of people, tied together by history and a relentless driving spirit. There is a saying in Bluefield: "If you don't like standing around in Bluefield, you can always lean up against it for awhile."
