Appleton is also noted for being the first city in the United States to be powered by hydroelectricity. It was also the hometown of legendary escape artist Harry Houdini. At the Houdini Historical Center, you'll find a collection of photographs and artifacts from his shows.

While the city has grown and spread to the north and west over the past 25 years, it has maintained much of its historic look and close-knit community feel. Local residents clearly take pride in their homes and neighborhoods as Appleton is a well-maintained and clean city. Appleton has long been an excellent place to raise your family as many of its families have been here for several generations.
