Madison Real Estate Information Madison is the capital city of Wisconsin. Known as the The City of Four Lakes. Madison has three identities — state capital, college town, and working-class city — all of which blends remarkably well together and synergizes. Although a state capital, Madison is an aesthetically-pleasing small city filled with parks. Its streets are enlivened by bookstores and cafes. The University of Wisconsin makes it home in Madison, and their involvement with the community is legendary. The University was one of the main rallying points during the Student Movement against the War in the 1960s Madison is filled with attractions and lots of inexpensive entertainment. Madison's most bustling thoroughfare, State Street, and the downtown area, Capitol Square, are great places to browse eclectic shops and visit unique cafes and restaurants. In the summer, Capitol Square hosts a vibrant, open-air Dane County Farmer's Market on Saturday and Wednesday mornings. In 1996 Money magazine identified Madison as the best place to live in the United States. It has consistently ranked near the top of the best-places list in subsequent years, with the city's consistently low unemployment rate being a major factor in its ranking.
