Platteville has always been a thriving place for its whole existence. Established in the early 19th century as a farming and fur trading post, Platteville boomed with the discovery of lead, spawning the creating of many lead mines that fueled the community’s prosperity. Along the way, two colleges were erected, which would later merge to become the prestigious University of Wisconsin–Platteville. Today, the university is the strongest economic contributor of the community after the lead mines dried up. With the influx of students during the school year, Platteville also has a healthy retail-trade and hospitality sector.
