Seventy million dollars! Well close to it. Just under $70 million was the reported negotiated price for a Palm Beach, Florida, home, making it the most expensive home sale in the United States. The buyer(s) requested to remain anonymous. Before this deal, the highest prices for a home purchase hovered around $45 million.
The 20,000 square-foot, Mediterranean-style home was currently owned by Ron Perelman and Ellen Barkin. Perelman is Chairman of Revlon Cosmetics and Citigroup Incorporated. Barkin is an actress that has appeared in such The Big Easy, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and Drop Dead Gorgeous. The house consists of ten bedrooms, forteen bathrooms, two pools and 400 feet of private beach. The property was designed by Abram Garfield, son of former U.S. President James A. Garfield, and built in 1919.
The house is located on the elite Billionaires Row neighborhood. The “Row” is also home to such financial tycoons like Donald Trump, and Netscape founder Jim Clark. located on “Billionaires Row". Singer Rod Stewart and his model wife, Rachel Hunter also have a home here.
Perelman purchased the property in 1994 for $11.6 million. The deal was negotiated by Lawrence Moens of Lawrence A. Moens Associates Inc., who represented both buyer and seller parties. The property was not listed for sale, and occurred only after Moen asked Perelmen if he could show it to a prospective buyer. Moens said that Perelman agreed to sell the property because he decided, “The stars were aligned perfectly for the deal”. Perelman listed the lots on either side of the estate for $10.9 million and $11.9 million.
