The Housing and Urban Development Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity announced that the Housing Authority of Baltimore City has agreed to create an additional 1,850 housing units for non-elderly people with disabilities. In addition, 755 public housing units must be created for people with mobility impairments, while 283 units will be added for the vision- and hearing-impaired.
This came at the request of the Department of Housing and Urban Development in conjunction with the Department of Justice. Both Departments stepped in after the Baltimore City Housing Authority was hit with a class-action lawsuit served by several city residents who claimed that they had been discriminated against because of their disabilities. They claimed that they had not received transfers to disability-accessible units nor did they receive modifications to make their units more accessible. Part of the agreement also includes upgrading all public housing constructed after 1991 to meet the requirements of the Federal Fair Housing Act and the Rehabilitation Act.
